Applied Experience

Criminal Justice 4398

2008-2009

This course is designed to provide community work experience in the field of criminal justice for upper division students (usually seniors with a 3.0 or better grade point average).  Students who successfully complete the course receive three semester hours of criminal justice elective credit.  Grades are issued on a credit/no credit basis.

How to Apply

Please visit Dr. Dorothy McClellan’s web site http://cj.tamucc.edu/crimhome.htm

You can access all information concerning the internship program, including completed application forms at the web site.  We have approximately 36 agencies from which to choose.

The application forms for each of the agencies contain a description of the work you’ll do there and the agency’s address and phone number.  After deciding which agency you wish to work with, arrange an appointment with the agency’s designated contact person to discuss the possibility of doing the applied experience.

If they agree to take you on as an intern, just have them sign the application form on the line that says ‘Supervisor’.  Be sure to sign your name in the designated space.  Then place the completed form in Dr. McClellan’s mailbox (Bay Hall) and register for the course. Her office is Bay Hall 340.

If you have any questions, please call Dr. McClellan at 825-2697.

The signed application form should be submitted before classes begin!

Course Requirements

Students are required to complete 150 hours of field work by the last day of class of the semester for which they register.  Students will keep a daily journal of their experience.  A final paper, 12-15 pages in length, that meets specifications outlined by Dr. McClellan, will be due at the end of the semester.  A time sheet signed by the agency supervisor reflecting completion of the hours must be submitted along with the journal and paper.  Several group meetings of the individuals enrolled in the course will be scheduled over the semester. Attendance is required.
